BEHIND THE NAME
Strengths and Meaning
Luma Valen is a Puerto Rican-born American singer-songwriter, recording artist, and model based in the New York metropolitan area. Blending cinematic pop with emotionally driven songwriting, she creates an immersive artistic world where music, fashion, and visual storytelling exist as one. Known for her ethereal presence and celestial aesthetic, Luma’s work explores love, transformation, vulnerability, and the courage to become fully oneself.
Music has been at the center of Luma’s life since childhood. She began singing in choir, studied flute and violin, and became first violinist in her orchestra before discovering songwriting through poetry inspired by The Doors. By the age of twenty, she was writing original songs that reflected the emotional depth and storytelling that continue to define her music today. Her Puerto Rican heritage remains central to her identity, shaping both the passion and emotional honesty woven throughout her work.
During those formative years, Luma apprenticed under renowned sculptor Arturo Di Modica, creator of New York City’s iconic Charging Bull. After hearing her music, Di Modica encouraged her to pursue singing professionally, becoming one of the first people to recognize her potential as an artist.
While music remained a constant, fashion became the next chapter of her creative journey. At seventeen, Luma won a beauty competition in Atlanta and earned her first modeling contract. She later received a full scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and was also accepted to the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles, where she chose to study. Her career in fashion led to collaborations with internationally recognized designers and brands, taking her around the world. While living in Los Angeles, she also sang backing vocals for signed recording artists, continuing to develop her artistry behind the scenes.
Following the birth of her daughter, Luma returned to modeling through the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Swim Search before signing with State Management in New York and later EMG Models NYC. Motherhood also inspired her to finally share the songs she had been writing privately for years. That decision led her to acclaimed producer and engineer Humberto Gatica, a seventeen-time Grammy Award winner, who connected with her voice and songwriting and agreed to produce her music.
Today, Luma Valen is building a multidimensional artistic universe where music, fashion, and visual storytelling come together to create an immersive experience. Her music invites listeners into stories of love, resilience, self-discovery, and hope, reflecting a belief that vulnerability is a source of strength and that art has the power to inspire meaningful human connection.
As she continues to release new music and expand her creative vision, Luma remains committed to creating work that is both deeply personal and universally relatable, offering audiences not only songs to listen to, but a world to experience.
